sometimes i use "netcat" , ethereal a free tools, wireshark it depends on your needs and way of familiarity of OS environment. there are many tools you can try on the net.

One great network tool that I'm using is the Angry IP Scanner. It's a great tool that can scan your subnets for live/dead hosts, etc.

I'm also using an IP Scanner for detecting used/ dead IP address or hosts. I forgot the brand name but it's still works for me. Also I'm using netstat for checking the outgoing and incoming routes of IP address. It only displays log events of network connections. ;-)

Hi,

 

i forgot to mention on my first pot that you can also depend on Nagios application.

thats what we're using to monitor different sites and dedicated servers.

Windows command, you can use;

  • ping
  • tracert
  • netstat
  • nbstat

I'm using  Spiceworks.  It's Free Networking Monitoring Software for Network Management. it also has built-in helpdesk system that helps us keep track and monitor
