Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista : Remote Server Administration Tool : KB941314
On my previous post on Remotely Managing Hyper-V Servers, it came to my attention that what if I also have remote administration tools like what I have on Hyper-V so that me and my team would not need to remote desktop on each server to check each server roles. It would be nice to have in one MMC console (as inspired by Windows Server 2008, Server Manager) an overview of all the infrastructure services (or those that needs more attention), then drill down to its details like if you have to manage a whole forest on AD including DNS, Certificate Services, Users and Computers. How about managing Windows Server Core? How about delegation of roles? All this right in your desktop?
I found a great update for Windows Vista Service Pack 1: KB941314 installs the Remote Server Administration Tools.
With RSAT you can now manage the following on your Windows Server 2008:
Server Roles
- Active Directory Certificate Services Tools
- Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Tools
- Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) Tools
- DHCP Server Tools
- DNS Server Tools
- File Services Tools
- Network Policy and Access Services Tools

- Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) Services Tools
Role Features
- BitLocker Drive Encryption Tools
- Failover Clustering Tools
- Group Policy Management Tools
- Network Load Balancing Tools
