Installing MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) 2012 Beta 1

For those who are new in Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, nothing much has changed in installing MDT 2012, but the most significant changes in MDT 2012 are the following,

  • Support Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 OS deployment
  • Add support for new operating systems
  • Support UEFI deployments
  • “Deploy to VHD” support
  • Improve partitioning logic
  • Wizard look-and-feel enhancements
  • Improve user state migration logic

You may download MDT 2012 Beta 1 here

After launching the MDT 2012 installer the welcome wizard will appear, click Next

Tick the box to accept the terms in the License Agreement then click Next

The wizard will let the administrator/users customize how MDT 2012 would be installed, or just leave settings by default

Click Install button to proceed

Click Finish to complete the MDT 2012 Beta 1 installation and launch the Deployment Workbench from the all programs menu.

Preventing Libraries on Start Up in Windows 7

A lot of questions have been posted in technical forums on how to prevent Libraries to launch in Windows 7, taking out the Libraries from during start up are mostly being done for companies with a Standard Operating Environment (SOE) or a Corporate Operating Environment (COE) Operating System Image.

Here's how to do it:

Before capturing a Windows 7 image (this would be probably during the customization phase)

  • Launch the Registry Editor, in the Windows start menu, type Regedit in the Search programs and files box

  • Go to this hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  • Modify the "Userinit" entry

  • and change the value data to C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe
  • restart the computer / login and confirm that the Libraries does not launch at start up
  • then you may continue to customizing Windows 7 before capturing the image via MDT/SCCM

Overview

Consumerization is a growing challenge for IT organizations. System Center Configuration Manager 2012 helps IT empower people to use the devices and applications they need to be productive, while maintaining corporate compliance and control. The boundaries between work and life have blurred to where people expect reliable, consistent access to corporate services from wherever they are, on any device they're using. Using System Center Configuration Manager 2012, organizations can:
  • Empower people to be productive from anywhere on whatever device they choose. This includes the wide range of devices that connect to Exchange ActiveSync, including Windows Phone, Symbian, iOS, and Android-based devices. Through the new application model, the best application experience can be delivered to the user based on their identity, their device, and their connection.
  • Streamline operations with a unified infrastructure that integrates client management and protection across mobile, physical, and virtual environments. Improved capabilities such as Forefront Endpoint Protection integration, role based administration, and virtualization scenario support will simplify both infrastructure and processes for IT.
  • Drive organizational efficiency for IT with improved visibility and enforcement options for maintaining system compliance. This means fewer mouse clicks to accomplish tasks and higher degrees of automation in activities such as patch management and settings enforcement.

Windows 7 SP1 through Windows Update

Another way to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is through Windows Update, I've recently done this in my Windows 7 Ultimate.

In your Windows 7 go to Control Panel\System and Security\ then Windows Update and check for updates SP1 should be listed in the Important update

Click Install updates

You'll be asked to restart your computer once done. It will take around 25 minutes to install SP1 through Windows Update, much faster than installing SP1 using the downloaded installer "windows6.1-KB976932-x86".

Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) in Windows 7 SP1

So Windows 7 SP1 is out, to admins using Windows 7 and planning to install RSAT, make sure to install RSAT first before applying SP1 for Windows 7  as installing RSAT after Windows 7 SP1 is applied, or even Windows 7 with SP1 slipstream, it won't work. This is some thing to consider.

Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 RTM

I had a change to download Windows 7 and Window Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 RTM binaries ahead of the public through my TechNet subscription last Feb 17 (Singapore Time) the slipstream version is also available. Here's just to show some screen shots I took before and after the installation of SP1 for Windows 7.

Initially the version of  my 64bit Windows 7 is 6.1.7600

My System Properties before SP1

Just to show you the size of SP1 X64 is slightly larger than the 32bit installer.

Running service pack 1

The wizard will let you choose to either automatically restart your computer after the installation is complete of not before hitting the "install" button.

The wizard gives you one more chance to save your work (if there are any) and close any opened apps before it lets you restart your computer.

After the restart it will take a while to update your registry and once done, a confirmation window will appear that SP1 has been installed which took around 45 minutes to complete.

System Properties indicates that Windows 7 in on Service Pack 1

Verified the version after SP1 is installed it should be 6.1.7601.

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 5.5 is now available

MAP 5.5 is now available for download:

link here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=67240b76-3148-4e49-943d-4d9ea7f77730

How the MAP Toolkit Works

The MAP Toolkit uses Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI), Active Directory® Directory Services (AD DS), SMS Provider, and other technologies to collect data in your environment without using agents. After the data is gathered, you can parse and evaluate it for specific hardware and software needs and requirements.

Key Features

The MAP Toolkit:

Simplifies the planning process to migrate your portable computers, desktop computers, and servers to the Windows 7, Windows Server® 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 operating systems and Microsoft Office 2010.

Inventories your infrastructure to assess and verify what is present in your existing environment to best determine hardware and software readiness for migration—for example, locating and reporting on instances of legacy operating systems such as the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.

Tracks software usage for software asset management purposes.

Assesses readiness and determines what needs to be done to successfully update all the hardware and software inventoried in your environment to the latest standards.

Helps identify underutilized resources and the hardware specifications needed to successfully consolidate servers using Microsoft Hyper-V™ technology.

Runs securely in small or large IT environments without requiring you to install agent software on any computers or devices.
